... been thinking (a lot) about editorial design lately. and to be honest, i miss the nineties. specifically fabien baron's elegant and modern typography in harper's bazaar. believe me when i tell you my inspirational boards back then were covered by his designs and layouts. harper's bazaar was my typography bible, and fabien baron was my design god. but come to think of it, that sentence should have been in present tense. i've always thought fashion, photography, and typography all go hand in hand. they tell such great stories, don't they? especially when told by fabien baron...

thanks ella! glad you enjoyed it :)
ReplyDeleteOMG- great post- fabien is definitely one of my heroes- him, Tamotsu Yagi from classic Esprit days, and Doug Lloyd- I was just digging up some old pieces Doug did with Barneys- do you remember those? with Linda Evangelista? totally defining design moment for me and has influenced me ever since! And then I realized how old I am. (sigh)...
ReplyDeletejon - yes, yes, and yes!!! are you going to post those? would love to see them! and yeah... i feel old too, LOL! but don't you just miss those days? i just find editorial designs nowadays are just not quite up to par, and it saddens me...
ReplyDeleteyes- i was OBSESSED with those Barney's campaigns- (long story) I actually met Doug right after his Barney's stint (another long story) and he had just started his own gig, and had just done the first Gucci campaigns with Tom Ford, and was sadly let down. Don't you hate that when you meet a hero and they just aren't what you imagined them to be? still mad respect for his talent and work- So now I kind of never want to meet Fabien, just admire from afar. keep the magic alive! LOL it's true what you're saying though about today's editorial- I guess it means it's time for that to come back!
ReplyDeletejon - look! i almost forgot i posted these long ago!!!

and i agree with the admiring from afar bit... ;)
yes!! OMG loved those!- I remember they sent out a little book that came with it- I think I still have it- it was my first taste/introduction to Barneys (they had just opened one in South Coast Plaza) I was hooked after that! I think shortly thereafter they did the Linda campaign, and that's when Doug Lloyd took over- I remember Doug saying he worked with Fabien during the transition. I don't think they liked each other, lol- So great you still have those!
ReplyDeleteLove these images! I collected magazines during the late 80s and early 90s with clothes, layouts, designs that I liked - corners turned down. I was a teenager then and the only person I knew with a file system devoted primarily to images. Too fun to see!
ReplyDeletejen - you should scan them and put on your blog! would love to see them! :)
